It’s tough being painfully nostalgic and sentimental. To me, everything has a bit of magic, and my iPhone photo storage feels the brunt of that. Driven by passion and perhaps being a college student with a very sad bank account, I decided to turn this passion into a good old-fashioned side hustle.

My Journey towards SH Photography:

The Hobby

From making messes in the basement with all of my arts and crafts as a child to creating a Pinterest board for every interest of mine today, there’s a creativity in me that overflows and needs to find its way out, one way or another. However, one form of art that has remained a constant in my life is photography. I enjoy nothing more than capturing a candid moment in time and looking back on it later, able to feel the same emotions my subjects felt when the photo was taken. Photography has always been a hobby of mine, and I don’t see that changing until the day I’m too old and weak to hold my beloved Canon EOS R50.

Passion to Profit

When I started college and found myself living away from home for the first time, I quickly realized—man, it’s tough out here! I needed a way to make some spending money, but between academics, campus involvement, and passion projects, a structured job didn’t exactly fit into my schedule. But then it clicked. Who says you can’t make a profit from your passions?

Photography gave me a way to earn money, build my own schedule, work for myself, meet amazing new people, and do something I genuinely love along the way. So, in the winter of 2025, SH Photography was born!

SH Photography Today!

What started as a way to make a little extra spending money quickly became much more than that. I began building SH Photography as a brand of my own. Today I continue to develop its identity, market my services, and grow my client base.

In a single semester, I photographed more than 50 clients, with much of that growth coming from repeat customers, referrals, and social media. By combining targeted social media advertising with word-of-mouth marketing, I was able to triple my revenue semester over semester. SH Photography has given me much more than a flexible college job. It has allowed me to channel my entrepreneurial spirit, taught me how to build a brand, earn the trust of clients, manage a growing business, and turn something I genuinely love into something that continues to grow!

PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN ART OF OBSERVATION.

IT HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH THE THINGS YOU SEE AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY YOU SEE THEM.

- Elliot Erwin

There’s storytelling in everything I do… sometimes I prefer to do it without words.
